This year, the Polish Ratio and Copernicus Science Centre Science Picnic took place on 8-15 May.

Due to the pandemic, this year’s picnic was organized online. The presentations concerned issues on climate change. The organizers wanted to illustrate how science and technology could help us adjust to the new conditions of living, and prevent further global warming.

The picnic presentations were organized into 8 zones: Future, Health, Best of Experiments, Family, DIY, Civilization, International Relations, and The Organizer’s Zone. More at: https://pikniknaukowy.pl/about24SciencePicnic

This year, IPPT PAN was represented by a team led by prof. Elżbieta Pieczyska from the Department of Experimental Mechanics. The team included: dr Maria Staszczak, dr Karol Golasiński, mgr Mana Nabavian-Kalat and dr Michał Majewski and gave presentations in the INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ZONE:

  • Show no. 1 – Climate, and not only us: a short summary of the current research conducted at IPPT PAN, including 3 introductory films (presenter: prof. Elżbieta Pieczyska)
  • Show no. 2 – Climate and us: Russia’s challenges and interesting facts– a presentation and film (dr Maria Staszczak)
  • Show no. 3 – Climate and us: Japan’s challenges and interesting facts – a presentation and film (dr Karol Golasiński)
  • Show no. 4 – Climate and us: Iran’s challenges and interesting facts – a presentation and film (mgr M. Nabavian-Kalat)
  • Show no. 5 - Building Waste’s Second Life – a presentation and film (dr M. Majewski)

The Polish Radio and Copernicus Science Centre Science Picnic has been held in Warsaw every year since 1997. It is Europe’s largest science event aimed at the promotion of science, during which scientific work is presented by research and development Institutions, science institutes, institutions of higher education, museums, science-related foundations and interest groups. They present science in a friendly way, accessible to all age groups, during hands-on, interactive experiments and exhibits.

In 2005, the Science Picnic was commended by the European Commission as one of 10 model European projects in the "Science and Society" field.

The Picnic is co-organized by the Polish Radio and Copernicus Science Centre since 2008.
