We are pleased to announce that, as of 1 December 2025, Professor Janusz Szczepański has assumed the position of Director of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN). Professor Szczepański’s term of office will last four years. The first meeting between the new Director and the Scientific Council of IPPT PAN took place on 18 December 2025.
During this meeting, the Scientific Council approved the appointment of Łukasz Jankowski, PhD, DSc, Prof. IPPT PAN, as Deputy Director for Research.
The current composition of the Institute’s management is as follows:
Director of the Institute – Prof. Janusz Szczepański, PhD, DSc
Deputy Director for Research – Łukasz Jankowski, PhD, DSc, Prof. IPPT PAN
Deputy Director for Innovation, Development and Cooperation – Tomasz Mościcki, PhD, DSc, Prof. IPPT PAN
Acting Deputy Director for Administration – Agnieszka Milczarek, MSc
Acting Deputy Director for Finance – Anna Leśnicka, MSc

Prof. Janusz Szczepański has been affiliated with the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN) for many years. Since 2013, he has served as Deputy Director for Research and currently holds the position of Director. He is a member of several councils, including the IPPT PAN Science Council and IPI PAN Science Council, and leads the Neuroinformatics Team at IPPT PAN.
He has authored numerous scientific publications in leading JCR-indexed journals, including papers that have become part of the established canon of Lempel-Ziv complexity, and in the analysis of neural signals. His research has significantly advanced our understanding of the efficiency of information transmission in neural networks, the distinctions between temporal and rate coding, and the impact of correlations and noise on neural communication.
Prof. Szczepański has also pioneered work in chaos-based cryptography co-developing novel methods for designing secure ciphers and S-boxes, and introducing the concept of the discrete Lyapunov exponent.
His career includes collaborations with leading science and research centers, such as the University of California San Diego, Miguel Hernández University in
Alicante, and ICREA-IDIBAPS in Barcelona. His work has been published in journals including Physical Review Letters, Neural Computation, International Journal of Neural Systems, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, and Computers & Security.
He has led national and international projects, reviewed doctoral and habilitation theses, evaluated professorial applications, and served as an expert on the Science Evaluation Committee at the Ministry of Education and Science.
Prof. Szczepański has notable teaching and organizational achievements, lecturing on information theory, cryptography, and probability theory, and supervising the completion of numerous doctoral and diploma theses. His research represents a model of interdisciplinary integration, bridging mathematical methods with neurobiology, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Additionally, he served as an expert for the National Bank of Poland (Centrast) in developing national regulations on digital signatures.
On the occasion of Professor Janusz Szczepański’s appointment as Director of the Institute and the establishment of the new management team, we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes. We wish the new leadership every success in achieving ambitious goals, meeting inspiring challenges, and fostering continued development that will further strengthen IPPT PAN’s position as a leading research institution.
At the same time, we express our heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing management of IPPT PAN for their many years of dedication and service to the Institute.
