We are delighted to announce that Dr. Eng. Mariusz Ostrowski has been awarded the Third Prize of the Prof. Michał Życzkowski Award, presented by the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The award recognizes outstanding scientific achievements in the field of mechanics published before the recipient reaches the age of 35.
This distinction honors the best individual works or coherent series of publications, evaluated in terms of their scientific level, originality, and the author's substantive contribution. The award is one of the most important distinctions in the field of Polish mechanics.

The aforementioned works concern the issues of control and safety of mechanical structures and infrastructure. The central achievement of Dr. Ostrowski is the monograph based on his doctoral dissertation, defended with honors in 2025 at IPPT PAN. The monograph proposes a new method of semi-active vibration control of mechanical structures using dynamically lockable joints. Locking the joints provides modal coupling, which allows for controlling the energy flow between vibration modes. Such a control strategy is applicable both in mitigating harmful or dangerous vibrations and in improving energy harvesting. The work includes not only theoretical considerations but also extensive numerical and experimental verification of the control efficiency. The series of works also covers the following topics: structural health monitoring using computer vision, the influence of measurement noise typical for computer vision on the quality of structural stiffness parameter estimation, calibration of computer models using experimental data, and vibration energy harvesting.
Dr. Ostrowski is a graduate of the Lublin University of Technology (2016). He has cooperated with commercial companies in projects related to the modeling and optimization of electromechanical systems and the Sentinel-5 space mission. He became associated with IPPT PAN upon starting his doctoral studies in 2017. He was also a researcher (executor) in an NCN OPUS project related to the optimal placement of sensors on structures for health monitoring purposes. For his research work, Dr. Ostrowski previously received the First-Degree Award of the Director of IPPT PAN for teamwork (2024) and a distinguished sixth place in the prestigious competition "The 2nd International Competition for Structural Health Monitoring" (IC-SHM, 2021) , which attracted 167 teams from 20 countries.
Currently, Dr. Mariusz Ostrowski continues his work in the subject matter described above and is engaged in implementation research related to computer vision, serving as a researcher in a Lider-type project (National Centre for Research and Development). The implementation research finds application in air cushions (jump cushions) used in firefighting.
